Paint From Life: The Story
Paint From Life started with a simple belief: that making time to create from direct observation can change far more than just your artwork
Stepping outside with a sketchbook, paintbox or pencil transformed my own practice. I became a better observer. My paintings improved. But more importantly, I discovered something I hadn’t expected—a community. Conversations. Friendships. A chance to slow down and get out of my own head.
I realised painting from life isn’t just about painting. It’s about being present.
That belief was cemented when I was invited to judge a local community “Artist of the Year” event. I spent the day speaking to every artist, asking why they had come.
The answers were remarkably similar.
“I haven’t painted in years.”
“I never seem to find the time.”
“I’ve always wanted to do this.”
Many of them admitted they wouldn’t have gone out to paint on their own. But because someone had organised an event and extended an invitation, they turned up. They made space in their busy lives for a few hours of creativity.
One conversation has stayed with me ever since.
An older gentleman showed me his beautiful pen-and-watercolour travel journals. Rather than taking photographs on holiday, he sketched the places he’d visited, scribbling little notes about the cafés he’d eaten in, the people he’d met and the moments he’d experienced.
They were full of life.
Then he quietly told me he hadn’t painted for two years.
Life had simply got in the way.
That struck me.
Not because he’d stopped painting, but because so many of us do exactly the same. Work, family and responsibilities naturally come first, and the creative things we love slowly disappear into the background.
That’s why Paint From Life exists.
It’s an invitation to make time again.
No competitions.
No pressure.
No expectations.
Just a welcoming community of people who want to spend a few hours observing the world, making something with their hands and enjoying the company of like-minded people.
Whether you paint in oils, sketch with pencil, work in watercolour or simply want to learn, you’re welcome.
If you create something you’re proud of, that’s a bonus.
The real success is that you came.
That you gave yourself permission to slow down.
To notice.
To connect.
To create.
If there isn’t already a creative community where you live, perhaps you don’t have to wait for one.
You can build it.
That’s exactly what I’m trying to do.
This first event is only the beginning. I don’t know how many people will come, and that’s okay. The important thing is that we’re making a start.
Because I genuinely believe a lot of good can happen when people gather to create from life.
So bring your paints.
Bring your sketchbook.
Bring your curiosity.
Step outside.
Observe.
Create.
Paint From Life.
